How to Avoid Looking Like a US Tourist

Make it Harder to Rob You

(Tips from someone who learned the hard way)
  • Only take what you don't mind losing
    • Jewelry
    • Personal items
    • Identification
    • Other valuables
  • Use a variety of monetary instruments and keep a record of each in a separate location
    • Traveler's checks
    • Cash (local and US$)
    • Pulse/debit cards
    • Credit card
  • Don't carry all valuables in the same location
    • Use neck/belt/leg pouches
    • Select clothing with buttoned or hidden pockets
    • Luggage is not a good place to store money or jewelry
    • Purses/backpacks/wallets are easy targets
  • Other ways to make it hard for thieves
    • Stay vigilant / be street smart
    • Jackets worn over shoulder strap purses
    • Use 2 wallets - one you don't mind losing and your “real” one
    • “Fanny” packs - wear in front, weave through belt loops
    • Use hotel safes
    • Lock luggage
    • Only carry what you will need for immediate use
    • Keep purse/backpack in a visible location with a hand on it
    • Consider items with straps that have a steel cable in them: fanny packs, camera bag, backpacks, purses, etc.
    • Try not to look like a tourist
