What is Transfer Credit Study Abroad, Research, Internship or Volunteer Program?

These types of programs encompass many possible opportunities, such as applying directly to an international university, applying through a sponsoring university, institute, or organization within the U.S., or conducting research abroad. Other opportunities include work, internship, teaching, and volunteer opportunities.

What academic coursework is available on Transfer Credit Study Abroad Programs?

Students may take a variety of courses that apply directly to their major or elective courses that are not regularly taught at Texas A&M University. Some students choose to take courses that give them exposure to an area of study that relates to their future career path.

Where can I study on one of these programs?

Students are allowed to study anywhere in the world but the Study Abroad Programs Office cautions students to consider world events and political issues when choosing a study abroad program.

If a student would like academic credit, the student CANNOT go to a country with a TRAVEL WARNING. Check the State Department's Website for current Travel Warning countries. If a student travels to a country with a TRAVEL WARNING, the student cannot receive academic credit nor financial aid. Refer to Travel Rules for more information.


Is there a language requirement for a Transfer Credit Study Abroad, Research, Internship, or Volunteer Program?

Language requirements depend on the program. If the program is a language based program, many programs accept beginning level to advanced level students.

Now, many pograms are offered in English or contain English speaking components. Please refer to the program provider, internship host or foreign university for more details about language requirements.



What are the TAMU requirements for a student studying on one of these programs?

Will I receive A&M credit for my study abroad experience?

Depending on the type of program abroad a student chooses, direct academic credit through Texas A&M University or transfer credit through a foreign or American institution is available. Should a transcript be available for issuance by an accredited institution, students must first complete the Transfer Credit Study Abroad Pre-Approval Form prior to departing abroad. Should the student not be receiving a transcript for a research, internship, or volunteer experience abroad, A&M credit is still possible via a Directed Studies 285/485/685 or similar course credit in each academic department on campus. More information here. Remember that up to 18 of the 36 hours of residency credit may come from an approved study abroad experience.


How much does a Transfer Credit Study Abroad Program Cost?

Students studying abroad on a Transfer Credit Study Abroad Program pay the Study Abroad Programs Office an Transfer Credit Study Abroad Fee (currently $100) once application forms are completed and returned the Study Abroad Programs Office. Texas A&M University doesn’t bill students for program cost except in certain cases.

Other costs for Transfer Credit Study Abroad Programs paid to a program provider or foreign institution include the following but are not limited to:

  • Tuition
  • Room & Board
  • Transportation
  • Books
  • Health Insurance
  • Additional Expenses

Remember that students may use financial aid toward these programs provided they meet the minimum eligibility requirements of the financial aid being accessed.
