Will I have email access?

Email time at the school each day is limited (about 15 minutes). There will be a small fee for those interested in using the email at the study center. Internet cafes are in town and cost approximately $10 an hour.

What is the cheapest/easiest way to call home?

It is cheaper if people from the U.S. call you. Buying a calling card in Costa Rica is the best way to call home. If you are calling the U.S. please do so from a public phone...do not use your host family's phone as this is extremely expensive.

Will I be able to go anywhere while I am there?

Yes, you must go with at least one other person. Also, women should always go with another female at night. 4. What's the easiest way to exchange money while I am there? There will be exchange booths in the airport once you arrive. Also, on the bus to your destination, a CPI representative will be able to exchange a small amount of currency for you. Once at the study center, a CPI representative goes to the bank twice a week to exchange money for the students.

Can I receive mail at the study center?

Yes, but please keep in mind a postcard takes about 2 and a half weeks to reach the U.S.

What shoes should I take?

You will certainly need some roughed up shoes that you don't mind getting very muddy. Many of the excursions and tours that you take will be going into very muddy areas. You can wear flop flops, sandals, or tennis shoes inside your host family's home.

How do I get my clothes washed?

Families do laundry about every other day and will include your clothes. It is customary for you to wash your own underwear.

Should I take any nice clothes?

Taking a nice pair of clothing is a good idea. Also, take a pair of khaki pants and/or neutral skirt to mix with different shirts for teaching.

How much money should I bring?

Most students spend on average $5,500-$7,000 for the entire program. The program cost will be between $3,500 and $4,000.  This includes a program deposit of $300, administrative fee, home stay accommodations, all meals, in country transportation, accommodations/transportation on all field trips,  and insurance. It does NOT include TAMU tuition/fees, books and other course materials, passport, or airfare to and from Costa Rica.

It depends on your personal spending habits as to how much you will need. Former students suggest budgeting roughly $300-$500 in spending money.

Should I bring a laptop computer?

No. Since there is no internet connection and because your assignments will be expected to be hand-written, there is no need for a laptop computer.
