Research, Intern, Volunteer Abroad

If a traditional study abroad experience does not interest you or you have already studied abroad, you may want to consider participating in a research, intern, or volunteer program abroad.

Research abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to conduct research while gaining cultural competency abroad. These opportunities may be organized individually, coordinated by a college or department, or facilitated by a program provider . This option is great for, but not limited to, students seeking careers in science, engineering, technology, or math.

This opportunity may be ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Pursuing graduate school
  • Gaining an edge in the competitive world of research
  • Obtaining hands-on experience
  • Exploring career options
Intern abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience and exposure to an area of academic or career interest, while exploring a new culture. Interning abroad provides you a more practical experience compared to a traditional academic one. Most international internships are unpaid, but this shouldn’t deter you from participating, as the experience is invaluable. These opportunities may be organized individually, coordinated by a college or department, or facilitated by a program provider.

This opportunity may be ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Improving language proficiency or gaining industry-specific language skills
  • Gaining valuable work experience
  • Living within the host culture
  • Creating an international network
