Intern, Research, and Volunteer Abroad

If a traditional study abroad experience does not interest you or you have already studied abroad, you may want to consider participating in an internship, research program,  volunteer program, or conference abroad.

Intern abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience and exposure to an area of academic or career interest, while exploring a new culture. Interning abroad provides you a more practical experience compared to a traditional academic one. Most international internships are unpaid, but this shouldn’t deter you from participating, as the experience is invaluable. These opportunities may be organized individually, coordinated by a college or department, or facilitated by a program provider.

This opportunity may be ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Improving language proficiency or gaining industry-specific language skills
  • Gaining valuable work experience
  • Living within the host culture
  • Creating an international network

Why pay to intern abroad?

  • Free yourself of planning. Program organizers usually coordinate housing, placements, orientations, etc.
  • Receive help with visa applications
  • Participate in supplemental cultural and career development activities
  • Program coordinators search for a placement that fits you
Research abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to conduct research while gaining cultural competency abroad. These opportunities may be organized individually, coordinated by a college or department, or facilitated by a program provider . This option is great for, but not limited to, students seeking careers in science, engineering, technology, or math.

This opportunity may be ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Pursuing graduate school
  • Gaining an edge in the competitive world of research
  • Obtaining hands-on experience
  • Exploring career options
Volunteer abroad programs provide students with the opportunity to give their time and energy to helping others with immersing themselves in a new culture. These opportunities may be organized individually; coordinated by a college, department, or student organization; or facilitated by a program provider.

This opportunity may be ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Practicing a language
  • Exploring career options
  • Developing transferrable skills
  • Making a positive impact on the lives of others

Why pay to volunteer abroad?

  • Free yourself of planning. Program organizers usually coordinate housing, placements, orientations, etc.
