Matt Hickey
Biochemistry
Matt Hickey is
a junior Biochemistry major and
Anthropology minor from The
Woodlands, Texas. He is working
towards graduation with Honors and
was awarded 2007 Outstanding Junior
in the College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences by the Agriculture
honor society Gamma Sigma Delta. He
currently conducts research on an
innate immunity protein known as
Toll-like Receptor 3 in Dr. Cheng
Kao’s biochemistry lab.
Matt is also
involved with several on-campus
organizations beginning with a
Freshman Leadership Organization
called ASSIST, in which he
participated as a freshman and has
maintained involvement as a BIG
brother to incoming groups of
freshmen. He is also the Vice
President of Global Justice, a
student group advocating social
justice. In addition, Matt enjoys
volunteering in the Emergency Room
of St. Joseph’s Regional Health
Center.
One of Matt’s
greatest challenges thus far in
college has been starting up,
managing, and growing his own
business. He is a general partner
and cofounder of Moonlight Video
Productions L.L.C., a company
specializing in wedding and event
videography.
In the summer
of 2007, Matt had the opportunity to
spend seven weeks at an orphanage in
Jos, Nigeria with the Rafiki
Foundation. During his stay he
taught classes of students ranging
from pre-kindergarten to
college-age. In addition to
newfound love for a hundred
wonderful kids, Matt took away from
this trip a passion for reaching
across cultural boundaries to enjoy
life with those who see it from
differing angles. Now that he is
back home, he is continuing his
involvement with the Rafiki
Foundation by helping organize a
large-scale book drive for newly
opening orphanages in Tanzania,
Rwanda, Liberia, and Ethiopia.
After
graduating from Texas A&M, Matt
plans to attend medical school. He
is passionate about providing
healthcare to traditionally
underserved populations of the world
and hopes to live and work in
Sub-Saharan Africa once he finishes
his medical training.
Matt is also an Eagle Scout and
loves spending time outdoors. Some
of his favorite adventures include
backpacking, running, swimming, and
fishing. |
