Alek Schmidt
Business—Management
Alek Schmidt is
a junior Management major in Mays
Business School. He is a current
President’s Endowed Scholarship
recipient and an active member of
the Texas A&M Honors programs. Alek
is planning to graduate in the
Spring of 2009 and plans to further
pursue a law school degree with an
international emphasis.
Alek was born
in Norman, Oklahoma, to Pam and
Arthur Schmidt and is the youngest
of three brothers. He attributes
much of his love for international
affairs to his Aunt Jeanne Miller, a
retired Commander in the United
States Navy. His aunt moved to
Norman when Alek was young and
helped foster his interest in
international events. He began to
seriously pursue these interests
when he enrolled in an advanced
placement course on world government
in high school. Also, he joined the
Model United Nations Club and won
awards for speaking during his
junior and senior years.
Additionally, during this time, he
was actively pursuing leadership
experience. As a percussionist
since middle school, Alek was
elected by his peers as section
leader from his sophomore through
senior year. He received his Eagle
Scout award during his junior year,
the culmination of a long career in
Boy Scouts which included a trip to
the National Jamboree in and around
Washington D.C. in the summer of
2001.
Growing up in
Norman, home of the University of
Oklahoma, Alek had a tough decision
to make on where he wanted to attend
college. His middle brother, Kyle,
was attending OU and encouraging him
to stay at home. However, his
oldest brother, Derek, was attending
Texas A&M while Alek was applying
for colleges. During Alek’s junior
year in high school, Derek brought
him down to watch an Aggie football
game versus the University of
Texas. Alek loved the spirit and
energy of Texas A&M, and he made his
decision that he would be an Aggie.
Since coming to
Aggieland, Alek has made academics a
priority, maintaining a perfect GPR
through two years of study. This
has allowed him to join such
prestigious organizations as Phi Eta
Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma, a
freshman honors society and a
business honors society,
respectively. He has also been
active in honors classes, already
completing his Foundation Honors
requirements and working toward
University Honors. An active member
in the TAMU Cancer Society, Alek
volunteered much of his free time to
help raise money for the American
Cancer Society. At the end of his
junior year, he was able to bring
his Aunt Jeanne—a breast cancer
survivor—all the way down from
Norman to the Aggie Relay for Life.
Alek plans on studying or interning
abroad during the Summer of 2008.
With the international courses he is
currently taking, the Academy for
Future International Leaders, and an
international experience, he hopes
he will be able to put his interests
and skills into practice in the
international community. |
